How to Create a Column Chart in Cognos report with Example Tutorial 3a

Column chart is one of the basic types of cognos reports. It is very easy to understand when the data is displayed in Column charts. Here is the basic example to create a column chart in cognos. you can check more information on different  cognos charts.

In this Example, we are going to Create a Column Chart to Plot Order Trends. Suppose you are a Cognos report author and is asked to create a chart that shows the contribution that each order method makes to revenue.


Steps to Create a Column Chart in Cognos report for plotting Order trends:
  1. In Cognos Connection, select a package. In this example, Go Data ware house package is selected.
  2. Now, Go to the report studio by clicking on the launch > report studio option.
  3. Now, Click in the opening box, you are provided with different options. Select "create a new template or report".
  4. In the New dialog box, click Chart and click OK.
  5. Now select the chart type as Column in the Chart selection window.
  6. In the Chart type pane, click Column with 3-D Visual Effect.Click OK.
  7. You can add some data items like current year, productline, currency etc.  Note: you can add any items as you like but make sure the report you are presenting is having minimum basic items.
  8. Click the Current year icon in the Series drop zone, and then from the Data menu, click Sort Ascending .
  9. Save the report by typing a custom name for your newly created report in Name box.
  10. Now the report for Creating a column chart is ready.
  11. Click the run button on the toolbar, and view the report.
