How to create a Map report in Cognos? Report StudioBeginners Guide Tutorial-4

In the previous Tutorials, You have successfully learnt how to Create a List Report, Chart Report and a crosstab report. In this Tutorial you will learn how to create a basic sample Map Report in Cognos 8. Though we use the map reports very rarely compared to that of the other three types, Map reports too have enough of significance in the modern world.

The map reports are used mostly when the output needs to be targeted at specific geographic target and a with a graphical representation.

Steps to create Map Report in report Studio:

  • Launch a Report studio report by clicking on the launch button on the top right corner of the Cognos Connection.
  • Now, a pop up window opens giving options for the type of the report. You can select map report from that templates. Alternatively, you can also select a blank page and add the map later by dragging it from the insertable objects pane.
  • Now, you will be provided with options for maps. You can select World map or any countries map by selecting them from the drop down options available.
  • You can select any country by selecting it from the region pane.
  • Now select None as options for pointers in the Point layers Box.
  • To select the seas and oceans you can select them in display layers box and selecting the option as “OCEANS”.
  • Now you can drag and drop various data items that you would like to show in the color drop zone and location drop zone.

For example if your target is to show a map report with “ The revenue generated in various places by a company all over the world” then
1.Map selected will be World Map.
2.Color Drop Zone will have “Revenue”
3.Location Drop Zone will have “Retailer Country”

So now you map report in cognos is ready and you can successfully create all types of basic reports with this tutorial.
